1967 25' Alglas

1967 25' Alglas
  • Hi all, I just bought my first boat. It is unknown model but it has a little plastic plate that says hull number and 'Alglas' on it. I can't seem to find a whole lot of info on it. Any thoughts or tips for a first time boat owner? Also not much on the boat works, other than it floats by itself so I'm starting from the beginning I think.

  • Welcome!
Great hull to start with and will hold up to just about anything. Is yours the express cruiser or the sport fisherman model? (with or without the fly bridge) Take some time and go through the posts on this site and you will pick up lots of usefull information. Where abouts are you located?

  • Don Casey's This Old Boat really helped me when I started out with my boat. Have fun!

  • No fly bridge, has a hard top over cockpit. I think it is an express cruiser. Also I'm in southern California and I'm wondering if my boat saw a lot of ocean to get here or a lot of land via trailer.

  • What in gods name was growing on her? She is an express, How does she run? If you get ahold of Commodore he has all the old records on these boats from the factory and for $20- he will send them to you.

  • It was a mossy lichen like stuff, bleach and water and 3 days of scrubbing took it all off, but now you can see where the gel coat and deck paint is gone or thin. Does not run, has a Chevrolet 327 that I am on the brink of getting it to turn over. It sat for at least 3 years with no start from what I heard. The sliding windows on the side leak in water in the bottom corners from the plywood dry rot, that is my next thing to fix. Any ideas on that subject to repair them without putting in a filler and silicone sealant like the previous owner did?

  • Leaky windows are unfortunatly normal on our old gals. I had to replace all the wood on the side of the cabin in the head. I carefully took out all the old wood till I got to the glass shell. Then I used west system epoxy to put the new wood in. Knock on wood (no pun intended) it came out nicely. I will look for the pictures and add them to the post.

  • Do they all have what seems like a bad design for the rear of the side windows with the drain for the windows inside the 'glass of the hull with small drains to the outside that keep getting plugged with small dusty stuff to make water sit in the window guides ?

  • Probably, look at past post's, there are a lot wit complaints and ways to repair leaky windows. Here are two photos of some of the repairs, I wish now I took them one at step at a time. What i did was epoxy the wood in and then I screwed another piece over it. It is a bit of work and working with the epoxy you will want to make sure you have good ventelation.

  • Nice boat, I have th same one sans the hardtop. Mine is a work in progress too. Spring is just around the corner here so I'm ready to get back on it, after I finish my bike:-). Good luck.

  • what kind of epoxy did you use to bond the wood and fiber glass?

  • I used west system epoxy with a filler added to thicken it. Then I scored the back of the plywood to give the epoxy just a bit more adhesion. I put the epoxy on both the new wood and the old glass and used c clamps to hold it in place. I let it sit for 24 hours before taking them off.

  • I'm on the boat now, working on it again. Had a fun chase, the shore power was on at the dock box and not on the boat. The culprit was at the consta-volt; two wires one black one white got corroded and heated up to keep blowing the fuses. Fixed it :) took some pics to post later of dryrot and window pane damage. Fun fun.

  • And I got it to turn over today :)

  • I have a stupid question; What is a velvet drive and how does it operate?

  • The velvet drive is what is known as your reverse gear aka transmition. I have a electronic version of the borg warner manual and if I can find it I will pm it to you.

  • Let me know if this opens for you.
