Crusader 210 thermostat

Crusader 210 thermostat
  • vairpilotvairpilot December 2011

    Hi All,

Working on rebuilding a couple Crusader 210's (350). Upon disassembly, there were no thermostat housings or thermostats anywhere in either engine. One engine appears to be original to the boat (1968 Alglas 31'), the other looks like a late 70's vintage, based on casting #'s on the blocks. The engines will be freshwater cooled since the boat will be in the ocean, don't want the saltwater headaches of raw water cooling. Can anyone provide info on what thermostat housings I should be using? Of course the boat came with no manuals, and with the variety of t-stat housings out there I don't want to choose the wrong ones.

    Thank you,

    Don

    Don,
My engine in Miss Nancy ('67 25' express) is the same as you describe. The engine was originaly a pacer but over the years has morphed into a cross between pacer and crusader. No thermostat housing to be found. I just finished repowering her and just went with the same configuration. I will be curious to follow your search. Good luck!

What kind of engine temps were you seeing with no t-stats? Our Pace will be running off the coast of Maine, so she will never get too warm. I just don't want the engines running too cold.

I rebuilt the engine in my 25ft sportfisher from 68 I stuck with the old log style manifolds and I have a thermostat housing from a mercruiser 5.7 with 2 nipples that go to the front of the logs.

Here is a pic, not the best, that shows the port engine. Maybe someone else with a similar setup can give me some info on the t-stats or temps they see. Upper right corner is the the coolant resevoir. Coolant outlet in heads go straight to the exhaust manifolds. Looks like coolant returns to the resevoir from the spacers at the far end of the manifold. This pic was taken before the engines were pulled, and I wasn't there for that event, so I didn't get to see the exact hookups of all the hoses.

  • Where in Maine are you located? We have several members here. Myself I am in Dresden. I run temps around 170 to 180 with mine. Lookig at your photo the set up is almost exactly the same as mine.

Shark, could you send a photo of your thermostat set up? Are you saying that they are in the log part of the manifold?

  • That makes sense since the t-stat is at the water outlet point, and my coolant goes straight from the head outlet to the exhaust manifold. Will have to crack them open next time I'm over by my Dad's where the boat is located. We are down in SW Maine, looking to put her in Wells or Biddeford/Saco this spring. Spent all summer and fall restoring her, last thing was the engines which we are finishing up now. Here's a pic of the outside, the inside is done too with fresh carpet, leak-free windows, new electronics, etc. Happy New Year all!

  • Very nicely done. Post more pics when you get a chance.

  • Checked the exhaust manifolds, no t-stats in there, and no place to put them since the bolt for the inlet runs right through the middle of the opening. Will investigate either getting a couple proper housings, or rigging something up myself between heads and exhaust manifold. I will also post some more pics soon, didn't take a lot of progress pics during the work, but will get some new ones since we are snow-free for the moment.

  • the thermostats are in the coolant lines going to the rear exhaust risers

  • i have a original engine manuel and thats were it says they are.

  • I don't suppose you would scan that manual and share it would you?
