Upgrade from 318 to 360?
-
I have a 1968 Alglas 25' and I recently blew the motor. :( I found a pair of engines (althought I only need 1) that I bought figuring I can rebuild one og them and have some spare parts. The one had a 318 tag on it. The other I discovered last night says ###### 360 ## on the block. Not a 318. I know the 318 and 360 are the same block size. The questions are is it a good idea to put the 360 in the boat? Will I gain any speed above 19 knots? Will I have to change the prop? Any issue with the Velvet Drive trans being able to hold up to additional power? Any advise would be greatly appriciated.
By the way what is HP rating on a 360?

As far as I know, Pacemaker used the same propeller for all the V8 25/26 foot boats...a 13x10 cupped, three-blade wheel. For Chevrolet based engines, this means the same prop for the 185HP 283 and the 270HP 350. I suppose one could optimize the propeller to some degree, but essentially, I'd think the stock propeller should be able to accommodate both of these Chryslers. You should without question gain some top speed potential...don't ask how much. I know that my boat will do 28+ kt with a clean bottom and the 350. I would expect something similar for a 360.
The Velvet Drive can handle the extra power. These transmissions are capable of standing up to big block gasoline engines.
Kind regards,
