anti-freeze in engine

anti-freeze in engine

I have a problem. my 67 33 saden bridge has 327 crusader engines and the starboard engine has antifreeze in the three cylinders on the right side. I removed the head and the exhaust manifold and had them psi check and they were ok. The head gasket look ok. Where can this be coming from?

  • Odds are you have either a bad head gasket or exhaust manifold. Have you been loosing coolant prior to this? I would also have your oil analyzed for antifreeze contamination. The antifreeze will kill your bearings.

  • Crusaders are notorious for riser issues, especially the return collars that separate the fresh and salt side of the exhaust system. look at the sealing surfaces carefully. Look for narrowing in the thickness of the cast, often the cast will carbonize and will not hold a seal.

The coolant was low and the sparkplugs tasted like antifreeze. when the psi tested the exhaust manifold the coolant ports held psi but the sea water port made bubbles out of the exhaust ports. I figured it would seeing the seawater goes out the mufflers i may be wrong.

I think i have to pull the rest of the engine and rebuild it anyways. When the water and oil mixed it made that creamy crap all in the engine. I figured the bearing, cam and lifters are wasted.

Just remember you can go reman as cheap as rebuilding (don't ask how I know this) and you get a warrenty with the reman.

They might not be needing a rebuild. Drain the bad oil, of course, and find and fix the leak. Add a bottle of Prolong engine treatment with the new oil, and you will be shocked how well it runs. Our old lady's 43yr old 327's have 1700 hours and run like a dream with that treatment. Other boaters we have turned on to it are amazed also, when they add it. Might save you a rebuild for $20.00.. Great product. http://www.prolong.com/A_ET.html Hoping for the best for you. Here's the testamonials on it. Motors with multi hundred's of thousands of miles on them.http://www.prolong.com/testimonials/testimonials_ET.html

  • I found the problem the exhaust elbow was rotted out and letting coolant run back down the manifold right into the exhaust valves

It may not be only the head gasket the Heads may half to be resurfaced because they are warped.
