Wish me luck!
-
Well I have run Miss Nancy on the trailer off and on for around 1 hour and all seems to be running well. So wish me luck gang, she goes over Friday morning and we will give her a work out to see how she is going to do. It will be a short season but hey better then no season at all. I will let you know the results as I get them.

Well she's in and running well, bit of housekeeping to do but nothing major. I ran her around at different speeds for an hour and temp looked good as did the oil pressure. I went back later in the evening and puttered a bit and managed to get all my way points plotted into the chart plotter.

Yesterday we realigned the engine and shaft as I was getting a bit of vibration. Took her out and ran for a bit over 1 hour. Great oil pressure, temp at the slow speeds is around 180 and at full speed creeps up to about 220 degrees. Running flat out at 3600 rpm ( need to find out why so low ) I was doing 17.5 knts. Nothing I am going to complain about as I usualy run between 220 and 2500 rpms anyway. & more hours to break in before the first oil change. My granddaughter enjoyed herself as she was trying to learn how to be a helmswoman

I don't think so Dennis, I think I am a bit on the warm side but am hoping it is because of the engine is just breaking in. If not I am debating on puting in a larger raw water pump.

Are you running raw water cooling or do you have a heat exchanger?
-
Paul, I don't recall if you are raw or fresh water cooled. Knowing you have probably asked yourself these questions I will ask them anyway. 1st I would ask, for a reference point, what temp did she used to run? Next has anything other than the engine changed since last year? By this I mean hoses, sea cocks, hose routing (kinks)? If you are fresh water cooled is there any air left in the system? Real dumb question, is your sea cock fully open? How recent is the raw water portion of your exhaust? Any crud in the oil coolers? Any crud in the intake strainer? Did you look at your raw water impeller this year? Are you using a thermostat from the old engine or one that came with it? Is it fully opening? I have run into new ones that would only partly open, passing only enough water for low speed cooling.

Hi Ken,
I am fresh water cooled, I put a new raw water intake in (1 1/2") and the hoses are new. The elboes for the raw water exhaust are new as is the raw water impeller. yes the sea cock is open all the way and I seem to have plenty of water coming out the exhaust though this fall when she is on the hard I will check to be certain that it is open all the way visualy. My brother who is a GM tech seems to think that it is not a worry that where the engine is a new reman that the temp may be part of the break in aka as the parts all break in then there will be a bit less resistence and she will run cooler. As I said the temp stays down at the slower speeds. and it is possible that there may still be some air in the system which I will be checking for this week. The temp drops right down when I slow her down. I will run her some more to see how she does. As for the old engine The temp guage never worked right so I really don't know what it ran at. I appreciate the ideas, keep them coming. -
Did you check the thermostat? My starboard engine was running warm (210-220) at high RPMs but normal at lower. I pulled the thermostat and it was stuck partually open, enough to let water to cool at lower RPMs, not enough for higher. Just a thought. By the way, your granddaughter looks absolutely thrilled being on the boat, glad to see the life jacket, you can't believe how many young kids I see running around boats without a PFD.

As far as I know at last check the heat exchanger was clear. I have no themostat, I have taken every last thing apart during the repowering and there is not one to be found, anywhere.
As for the life jacket they are required by law here till age 12, aat least I think it is age 12. The wife picked this one up for her last year at the marine store she works at and so far the grand daughter likes it. Last year I had all I could do to get her to go out to the boat with me, now it's just the opposite. I hope to get her to love the water as much as I do. -
The thermostat was just a thought.
As far as the PFDs, it is a national law (USCG) law that all 12yo and younger have to wear them, most don't and I don't get it. A few weeks back, a family in an 18ft bowrider was trying to pass me on the RIGHT (duh!!) from behind, I was doing a pretty good clip, my wake launch a young passenger out of their boat as their bow came down. No PFD, dumb but lucky. PFDs are like Boater Safety courses here in NJ, required by law but most don't have either.
Miss Nancy looks good........
