I have a new project boat to finish. With that being said, there are so many great deals out there that can be bought right. These are finished boats and not projects. It really makes more economic sense now to purchase a finished boat. The money you will end up with invested in the project boat will far exceed todays market price on a finished one.
I just saw a 31 Bertram for 19K. It is operational! Does that tell you anything about the current market.
A few yeras ago our mind set was project boat due to market prices.
More than likely they will only get cheaper in the future.
I wished I had waited. -
In the Boston area there has been a 42 listed for sale on and off over the past several months to a year. My understanding is she has been on the hard in his yard for 2 years. I plan to look at her in the next day or 2 to think about if I want to take her on, or at least get some more info to pass on to others who could be interested. The owner wants short, short money, but then again in this day, age. and market short, short money doesn't over come the demands and general perception of wood. Anyone interested or have any thoughts?

Hi everyone, I have to second Morning Wood on the finished boats compared to project boats. I am seeing more current, clean, sound hulls with good quality running gear available in the used market and the prices are lower than we have ever seen. The current economy is having an impact on boat owners everywhere. The boat insurance companies are very saavy to the scams that were tried by people that were in over their heads and they just do not pay off so easily any more. My boat yard has more boats hi & dry at this time of year than I have ever seen. Boats are luxury items that uses our expendable income. We are seeing a continuing market adjustment as costs continue to rise for everyone.

With all of the above in mind, knowing what I would probably find yet optimistic as always she could be a find, I went to look at her. She was what I expected. If work had been aggressively started as soon as she was clear of the water she could have had a chance. Instead she has not been covered and no attempt made to stabilize her and she is a goner. Still having said that I don't regret the time to look at her. She was a wonderful thing at one time.

Hi Ken,
I saw the same ad on craigslist, and wanted to do some research. I found your post, and just wanted to get a bit more details. Is the boat truly a goner? I'm looking forward to a project boat, but if it's 2 planks and a windshield, I won't bother with the trip to Tewksbury. If there's any life left in her, let me know. Thanks!

I would definitely pass on this one. She is now a collection of rotting twisted wood that resemble what was once a great boat. The first thing you see when you come up to her are the planks above and below the water line pulled away from the stem. The stem itself is questionable. The boat was reasonably well blocked under the keel, however she is sagging over the keel. Just by feel in the cabin I would say the at this point there is 2-3" of sag. If you're still interested after walking past the bow you get to the the rot where the shear begins her rise. There are at least 4 planks per side rotting from water running down from leaks in the deck. The bottom needs a total refastening. The transom is rotting at the top both sides and undoubtedly low down. There is evidence of some bottom planking replacement in the stern at some point in the past but it was very poorly done. When I went on board I was basically only interested to see her lay out. A quick peek at the starboard engine found a big rusty lump. The owner had told me she needed distributor caps. That she does but she also needs distributors to put the caps on. As I said earlier I went on the long shot she might be a find but more just for the fun of it. It was hardly out of my way as I was working a job over in Lawrence.

Thanks for the great info, Ken! Like you, I wanted to see this boat even if it's not all that great, but it sounds like junk, so I'll save the trip.
I like the ebay link you posted, but I doubt I'd have time to look at it before auction end. I'll keep my eyes open. Thanks again!!

Lushka16 - I don't know what you have in mind for a boat: size, style, number of engines and such, but my daughter's boyfriend is sell his 28' Luhrs. Her is a link to her pics http://s685.photobucket.com/albums/vv21 ... 8%20Luhrs/
