Windows on 1978 36' Pacemaker

Another vote for Waterway...they did the windows on my 48 sportfish
-
Hi Tim
My port and starboard cabin windows were just delivered from Waterway Systems and are sitting in my garage still in the crate. I was also worried about the curvature from front to back, the fiberglass bows out in the middle but I think the aluminum frame will straighten it out. I didn't match it up to the pattern that I sent him, but will real soon. I did a lot of research on these windows and for the money, Waterways seemed like the best way to go and the nicest frames. I had them painted ivory to match the boat. I'd like to put some ideas together on how to install the windows, so if you have any ideas or questions feel free to ask. I have a 1973 36' Sportfish. I have pictures posted if you want to look.
Thanks,
Chris -
Chris- I just ordered windows from USA Marine Windows Inc. in Florida. Reason that I went with them was that they said they could bend frames slightly to accomodate the bow. I am going with the fixed glass frame (not sliding) I also am having them put 2 mullions in the frame to allow for greater flexibility. So, far customer service has been very good. As far as install, I am now in the process of repairing rot around windows. I have a bunch of wood to repair/ replace. I also need to close in the small triangular opening towards the rear bulkhead. Not sure if you have the same design in the '73. I have been reasearching caulking/ adhesive material. I have been told to stay away from 5200 just in case windows ever have to come out. I am considering 3M 4200 or 4000. I am leaning towards the 4000 due to its greater flexibility. Any thoughts on this?- Tim

Tim,
I took the windows out of the crate and they match the template. I also talked to USA Marine Windows and they seemed very good. The frame from Waterways has a bullnose curve around the edge.
They drilled and countersinked 18 holes and said that should be good. I was also gonna use the 3M 4200 or 4000. I also have rotted wood to repair/replace. I still need to look into the 4000, never heard anything about it. We keep our boat in Clinton, CT. Where are you located?
talk with you soon.
thanks, Chris -
I'm in the process of relacing 6 of the 8 large pieces of glass in the upper and lower salon windows. These are fixed, permanent windows, not sliders. The previous owner had used 5200 to bed the glass, and 6 of the large windows ended up spider cracking from being bedded inflexibly in the 5200. It is also a BEAR to remove the 5200. Ive replaced two so far, and bedded them in 3m 590 (black). It is remaining somewhat flexible and has formed a good, no leak seal. I haven't used the 4000UV, but heard good things from another boat owner replacing some of his glass.

Guys Thanks for the feedback. Had a little set back this past weekend due to the storm here on Long Island. My shrink wrap tore off during the storms. My windows were out of the boat. Thanksfully I was at the Marina and with the help of some friends, was able to get wood cut to cover the openings. Was quite a hariy experience. Thankfully there was not damage and I was able to keep the rain out. I will keep you posted with developments with my install. Please do the same on your end- Tim

Been a while since I updated. The windows were received in good order. Guill from USA Marine windows did a great job of putting these together for me quickly. I do not have themn permanently installed yet. Just dry fit. They went right into the cutouts with some minor grinding/ cutting. I have been working on remaining rot issues and closing in rear cutouts that are no longer necesssary due to the new windows. Everything should be glassed and windows permenantly in some timne next week. Will let you know the outcome and will provide pictures.- Tim

Hi All, I am new to this site..... This is my first post....I just completed (June, 2010)a Waterway System change-out on my 1975 40' MY........... WOW, these windows are fantastic.....Chuck at waterway is real easy to work with and delivered my windows on time and on bugget... I added an extra post and decided on NO openings/Slider (fixed) with 1/4" tempered Black limo glass... If the previous owner had done this I wouldn't be rebuilding half the boat...there about $2000.00 each but well worth the investment......... NO MORE LEAKS no more shrink rap......... EVER!

Congrats on the new windows. These boats were built quite well in the 70's if they just did a better job with the windows they would all still be floating today. Do we get to see any pictures?
